State of Decay 2 is a survival game that takes place well into the zombie apocalypse. I'm about as confused as you are right now. Given the excess of zombies in entertainment right now, I should probably hate State of Decay 2, a new zombie game for PC and Xbox One. Doubly so for video games, a medium in constant need to give players hordes of foes they can gun down and not feel morally compromised-hence their fondness for Nazis and zombies (although the former might have taken on an air of controversy for some strange reason.) I don't know where the breaking point was-maybe it was the 819th time The Walking Dead suggested "maybe we are the real monsters"-but you'd be hard pressed to find a modern zombie story with anything truly interesting to say. It doesn't matter what medium they're in, zombies are the most boring existential threat in popular culture, probably because we ran out of interesting things to say about them at least ten years ago. Updated May 20, 2018: Updated following the launch of State of Decay 2.Generally speaking, I have had it with zombies.

Additionally, only certain survivors are eligible for a leader role, with their personality influencing how settlements are managed.Įach leader has a distinct leadership style, categorized under four leader types. Only one member can be promoted to leader status at a single time. New community members will join the team as "recruits," before progressing to "citizens" and "heroes." By hitting hero, the survivor will gain special abilities tied to this status.Ĭommunities can also have an elected leader, dictating how it approaches challenges going forward. By completing activities that help the community, that member will be rewarded with increased standing among their allies. Survivors are also ranked, with rewards in place for leveling up.
